ST GEORGE’S, January 29, 2018 – Athletes are continuing to show keen interest in the 2nd Grenada Invitational Track and Field Meet scheduled for the Kirani James Athletic Stadium on April 21, 2018.
The latest athlete to confirm participation for the Invitational is American female shot putter Jeneva Stevens who has a personal best of 19.11 metres and already threw 18.25m for the 2018 indoor season.
Stevens is the daughter of former boxing world champion Oliver McCall who is best known for an upset knockout victory over heavyweight Lennox Lewis and the following year against Larry Holmes before losing to Frank Bruno.
Stevens joins about 35 other athletes who have already confirmed participation in the #GI2018.
Cuban long jumper Maykel Masso (8.33m), Invitational 400m hurdle champion Quincy Downing (48.13), high jumper Yorgelis Rodriguez (1.95m), quarter-miler Dominique Blake and 100m runner Barbara Pierre (10.85) are among the list of competitors.
Masso, the former world youth and under-20 champions, finished fifth at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in
London. He is only 18 years and has a personal best of 8.33 metres.
Canadian triple jumpers Caroline Ehrhardt and Divya Biswal will have a showdown among competitors from Cuba and the Dominican Republic including Liadagmis Povea and Ana Tima respectively.
World 100m champion Justin Gatlin was among the first headline athlete to confirm his participation in the 2018 Grenada Invitational which is expecting a large contingent of athletes from Cuba.
“The Cubans have expressed keen interest in participating and sending a large contingent of world class athletes to the Grenada Invitational and there has been constant communication between the meet officials and the Cubans,” said meet organiser, Michael Bascombe.
“They have started to submit their entries and athletic fans could expect a treat from the Cubans as they bring their competitiveness to Grenada this April.”
The Grenada Invitational has been sanctioned by the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) as an Area Permit Meet.
